Game length is player-controlled and is triggered in a few different ways. The lighthearted artwork and slim rulebook belie the strong strategic and tactical elements of Glory to Rome.

Glory to Rome Black Box Review - with Ryan Metzler

The first time you play Glory To Rome, you slowly piece together how this system works.By the end of the first game, you can grasp the elegance of how every card could go anywhere, but also how.
Glory to Rome is a card-based city building and resource management game with a novel mechanism. Each card may act as a building, a patron, a raw material, or a valuable resource, frequently forcing players into difficult decisions regarding how each card should be used.
Glory to Rome is an ingenious game that provides plenty of fun and will be very different every time its played. The chaos provided by the randomness of the cards means this is not a game for detailed planning. But you do need to think ahead, work out what resources you’ll need and collect them. The game is quite low in complexity but very demanding in strategy. Play it once and you'll know exacly how it works. No fluff or appendix. Every action and interaction in the game is designed to make as much sense as possible. The game has a round quick guide on the Main Board and a little actions quick reference guide.
Glory to Rome is a seriously engaging card game that has the players all acting as Roman patricians attempting to rebuild their burnt home and show the emperor (back then his nickname was 'Crazy Nero') that they love Rome the most.

Product Dimensions 10 x 7 x 1.
The first time with 'gamer' type individuals who grasped the rules fairly quickly and did not need much help.
The second time the group was more casual and one of the players dropped out after a few turns.
Overall I would say the game is excellent for a gaming group.
The casual gamer might find it a little too complex.
What is really cool about this game, that each card can be used in multiple ways, is also what makes it more difficult for casual gamers.
This is the first game I have about 50 that is so small that also has so much depth to offer.
I will gladly continue to play this game with anyone that is interested in learning it.
If you are into strategy or empire building games I'd say you should give this a try.
I've heard Glory to Rome compared to other games, but I cannot think of anything that you can really compare it to.
I like the art work on the cards, although they are not of the highest quality and I bought sleeves for them after the first play once I decided it was a game we would play enough to need the protection.
When I recently purchased Glory to Rome GtRAmazon displayed the newer "Black Box" version of the game, rather than the former 1.
At first, I thought it was the fault of the seller Alliance Gamesbut it turns out that Amazon just arbitrarily used the Black Box picture on the description page.
On the other hand, the description did not mention "black box" or "version 1.
So, my fault for not finding out before purchasing.
Still, I was upset that Amazon had little regard for this important distinction.
I believe the advertised picture has now changed.
Anyway, I was going to return glory of rome board game game, and Hobby Game Center was most helpful and courteous.
Yet, in the end, I kept the game.
And I'm fine with that!
GtR is actually an interesting card game for 2 to 5 players, based on acquiring victory points through erecting "buildings" and storing materials.
So-called "Orders" cards provide multiple functions, such as laborer, patron, influence, building material, and expanded player options.
Some aspects of the game, such as tactical and strategic choices, only become apparent once you start playing.
The rule book offers suggestions on how to ease into the game.
I should point out that the newer "Black Box" version is better packaged, with new art and a better-published rule set.
There has been criticism about the older "cartoony" artwork of this particular version 1.
This is an opportunistic strategy game, not a deep-thinking campaign, like Bridge.
There is some loosely-used Roman terminology: One role card allows you to "hire Clients," which does not match how the term was used in Glory of rome board game />GtR uses wild cards and calls them "Jacks" rather than traditional "Jokers" so the cards would probably be named "Follis nobilis" rather than "Iacomus nobilis" as they now are.
Again, most people will probably not care.
Fortunately, you do not have to be a student of Roman history to appreciate or enjoy Glory to Rome.
And it IS a good game.
Once you understand the concepts and get familiar with the cards, the game can move along fast enough to play it at least twice in one sitting.
I cannot say whether you would prefer this version or the newer and slightly more expensive "Black Box" version.
The components are rather poor.
This version of Glory to Rome comes in the worst packaging I have seen for a game.
It came in a plastic clamshell box, like you would expect to see around scissors or a calculator.
The cards are of flimsy and fragile and I doubt they will hold up to a lot of gameplay.
The rulebook is folded in half on itself and jammed into the clamshell.
The illustrations are fun, the game is entertaining, but not worth the price currently listed now it is out of print.
It seems like the designer made another game, Uchronia, based on Glory to Rome that glory of rome board game likely more refined on components and design.
If I had it to do over, I would probably have bought that instead.
I actually bought this thinking it was the official cartoonish first print release that got so much smack in the forums.
The black iconic euro image print is generally considered the prettiest.
Instead what I got was a collectors' item.
I love this game, but can't play it with this copy.
It's basically a prototype.
Its a great game.
Wish I could get a black box edition though.
The cards are ugly, the box is ugly, the rule book is crudely made.
Its a blast to play.
It can be hard to pick up the game because there really is no other game like it to compare to.
But once players learn the rules they seem to pick up one what to do quickly.
Great game lots of fun.
Played this game with my regular gaming group, and then at a local game-a-thon.
The cards are not very pretty, and the theme is weak we at no time felt like Romans.
That being said, we had a blast playing.
First few games took a while, and then the strategies became clearer.
Rules are short and clear, and all had the rules down quickly.
This is in the category of "easy to learn, hard to master".
Designed by engineers so there is one deck of cards which are your actions, your things to build, and your building materials.
Quite simple but really fun for both people who strategize a ton and those who don't much.
Heard good things about this game, so took the plunge.
What a great decision!!!
As a strategy card game, it is superb.
Be ready for strategy and a learning curve.
We've found the difficulty is glory of rome board game, because after a number of games, we are still discovering great strategies.
Set your expectations to a round or three of learning how to play.
This is not a "sit down and play" game.
Its a sit down and learn how to play before you play game.
But once you get it down.
